Japanese Maple trees thrive with the right fertilization. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer with a ratio such as 10-10-10 or 12-4-8, which provides a good mix of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Apply the fertilizer in early spring before new growth starts and again in late summer. Avoid fertilizing late in the season, as it can encourage new growth that may not harden off before winter. Spread the fertilizer evenly around the drip line of the tree and water it in thoroughly. Additionally, using a mulch of compost or well-rotted manure can help improve soil structure and provide additional nutrients.
